Vampires. Werewolves. Beasts that hunt in the night. When New Orleans Detective Jane Hart investigates her first official homicide case, she never expects to have her world ripped apart. But the murder she’s investigating is part of a deadly war between vampires and werewolves and now Jane is caught in that eternal battle. A battle that can’t end well.

Werewolf Aidan Locke has been running New Orleans for years. It’s his job to keep the vamps out of the city. But when a Master Vampire comes to town, determined to unleash hell, Aidan knows it’s time to fight with all the fury of his pack. Beast versus vamp, until the last breath. Then he meets Jane.

One look, one taste, and Aidan knows that Jane is far more than she seems. Far more than she even knows herself to be. She’s important in the paranormal war, not a pawn to be used, but a queen to be won. And if he can’t keep her at his side, if he can’t stop the darkness from descending on the town then Jane Hart will become not just a fierce cop, not some guardian, but something deadlier. Darker. Aidan will fight heaven and hell to change her fate. To change their fate because he is more than just a predator.

And Jane is more than prey. Far more.

Format: Audiobook

Narrated by Sophie Eastlake. I liked her performance, she had a calming voice, and in doing so made the thriller parts seem scarier.

I have read several of Cynthia Eden’s books and they are amazing. She is so imaginative and this is a fabulous example of why I love this author.

A brutal murder leads Jane to a victim whose blood was drained and throat ripped out. Then the body disappears, and Jane is introduced to Aiden, the Alpha of the pack, and the one who needs to stop Jane from interfering in the Otherworld..

Are you sniffing me?”
He stopped.
“Because that is some weird serial killer shit if you’re doing that. Don’t make me go for my gun again.”

Jane was incredibly likable; a tough as nails cop who was Kick-Ass. She reminded me a bit of Jane Tennison from Prime Suspect.

Aiden.. oh Aiden. Just yum! He was demanding and strong, Possessive and protective.

What was that about? Why did you kiss me?”
Propping his shoulders against the door, he leaned back and let his gaze sweep over her. “I want to fuck you.”
She stopped pacing.
“I thought the kiss made that pretty clear.” He lifted a brow. “Was I too vague? Should I try again?”
“You’re not supposed to say things like that.” Her voice had gone hoarse.
She obviously had him confused with a human. Her mistake. “What am I supposed to say? That you’re beautiful? That you charm me? That I look at you and ache?” His laughter was rough. “Those lines are for mortals, not for me. That isn’t the way I work.”
After drawing a quick breath, she took a step toward him. “How do you work?”
“I’m a very primitive kind of guy.” That was the flat truth. “When I see something I want, I take it.”
“I’m not something. I’m someone.”
“And I’m not the flowers and candy type. I am the type who’ll give you so much pleasure you’ll scream until you’re hoarse.”
She stared at him. “Got it. You’re the way too overconfident type.”

…The Children of the Night… what great book they make…

I wanted to write a small fluff piece about my obsession with Paranormal Romance. It’s start with the Chosen one.

When I was 9 years, a TV show started on the BBC about an only child, with a destiny. She had strength, beauty and Witt. She fought the bad guys, had amazing friends, and a Tall Dark Vampire following her around like a lost puppy. This was Buffy.

Oh, how I longed to live in Sunnydale. To visit the Bronze, to hang out in a cemetery, with a stake… to be able to kick my enemies ass, to be confident…

As an impressionable youth, I couldn’t have asked for a better role model. I couldn’t have asked for a better show with a female lead, and in my opinion, there haven’t been very many since then. W.W.B.D?

Vampires pretending to be humans pretending to be vampires… how avant-garde!

I’ve been a BookDragon since I could read and naturally tried to find Books that featured Vampires and strong heroines. I started with The Last Vampire by Christopher Pike, The Vampire Diaries by LJ Smith, and Various Buffy Books , which tied in with the series.

As I got older so did my taste in Vampire books and TV. Then Twilight mania hit. I read the books, they were okay, but.. the sexy part of the Vampires were gone.. the Fangs, and why did they sparkle. Nope.

When other little girls wanted to be ballet dancers I kind of wanted to be a vampire.

Nowadays, I read tarot and Oracles based on Vampires, my colouring books have Vampires in various gothic poses, and I read a LOT of Vampire Novels.

At this point I started to read Dracula, Salem’s Lot, The Vampire Chronicles (Anne Rice) .. then the miracle of TV brought TrueBlood. My new taste in vampires were tall dark blonde Vikings. All Paranormal Romance for me has a place in my heart but Vampires.. those children of the night what great books they make..

My Wicked Week: 3rd-9th Feb 2020

This week in Batina-Land…

What have I been colouring?

I’ve been looking at techniques to improve my special effects. Firstly I wanted to concentrate on backgrounds so I started with brickwork. I’ve seen plenty of tutorials online about brown brickwork, but hardly any when it comes to grey, castle-like brickwork. I dived head-first and I think it came out okay.

Zenacolour II

I’ve been trying out some creepy colour palates this week using my prismacolours, and I have finally found the perfect combination for Red Blood.

Prismacolors: Perfect for Blood 🩸

The Colours I have chosen are:

🩸Crimson Red – PC 924

🩸Poppy Red – PC922

🩸Crimson Lake – PC 925

And finally I got bored at work this week and started a Horror piece from Alan Roberts Beauty of Horror. It’s unfinished and to be honest, at work I use Zenacolour and this are less superior to my Prismacolor… and YES, a workman is blaming her tools!!

What am I reading?

In 1872, New Orleans is a city ruled by the dead. But to seventeen-year-old Celine Rousseau, New Orleans provides her a refuge after she’s forced to flee her life as a dressmaker in Paris. Taken in by the sisters of the Ursuline convent along with six other girls, Celine quickly becomes enamored with the vibrant city from the music to the food to the soirées and—especially—to the danger. She soon becomes embroiled in the city’s glitzy underworld, known as La Cour des Lions, after catching the eye of the group’s leader, the enigmatic Sébastien Saint Germain. When the body of one of the girls from the convent is found in the lair of La Cour des Lions, Celine battles her attraction to him and suspicions about Sébastien’s guilt along with the shame of her own horrible secret.

When more bodies are discovered, each crime more gruesome than the last, Celine and New Orleans become gripped by the terror of a serial killer on the loose—one Celine is sure has set her in his sights . . . and who may even be the young man who has stolen her heart. As the murders continue to go unsolved, Celine takes matters into her own hands and soon uncovers something even more shocking: an age-old feud from the darkest creatures of the underworld reveals a truth about Celine she always suspected simmered just beneath the surface.

What am I watching?

HBO’s TrueBlood

One of my Favourite series of all time and it needs a re-watch, as I need so Vampy inspiration for my colouring. So that was my week.. let me know what you’ve been up too and

Ghost Story #1: Halloween 2012

I feel like I am going crazy. It has to be the stress of moving into a new house or the divorce. Something. No sooner had I laid down in bed; things start to happen.

It’s an old house and at first I put the knocking and the creaking down to the wind and rain outside, but the door handle rattled inside my bedroom. It was like someone could not get into a locked door and would repeatedly try to turn the handle.

On the third try the door opened and a slither of grey moonlight crept into my room and over my bed. I remember looking from beneath my threadbare blanket and seeing only the outline of my door. And then… then the light was slightly blocked by something. I could make it out beneath my blanket, but the fear was sending shivers up my spine. I couldn’t move. I was frozen.

I shut my eyes, pretending that this wasn’t happening. I remember thinking that I should just turn over onto my stomach and go to sleep, but somehow that made me feel vulnerable.

All of a sudden the blanket was ripped from my hands and the bed, and was laid in a pool at the bottom of the floor. I glanced up at the door to see what was blocking the light. I could make out a dark silhouette of a tall woman. I couldn’t see her face, or what she was wearing but as if by instinct I knew it was a woman.

“Who are you?” my voice was cracking in fear.

She didn’t speak, but I felt a pair of eyes that I couldn’t see, look straight through me. She turned her head sharply, as if she heard a noise and walked towards the noise, and disappeared from the crack of light. I wanted to feel relieved but the pressure in the room seemed to close in. I felt that someone was sitting on my chest. Something heavy and constricting. I looked around the room. Nothing was out of place. Nothing was there.

Out of the corner of my eye I saw something. The women was back. She was pacing in the hallway. Back and forth. Back and forth. I couldn’t hear any footsteps, but she began to pace more furiously.
Back and forth. Back and Forth.

Then she stopped. Turned and looked straight at me. This time I could see her face. It was grey and gaunt. With a small, thin mouth and black eyes. She stared at me for what seemed like minutes, but could have only been a few seconds. She opened her mouth, wide and let out a piercing, high-pitched scream.

I closed my eyes and held my hands over my ears to protect them from the noise, but it was like she was screaming in my head. I couldn’t block her out, so I screamed as well. Over the scream I heard a loud bang to my right. My eyes flew open and swiped towards the window, where I heard the noise. The window was open, and the wind flew across the room with such a large force, that the door closed. The screaming stopped. The door had slammed shut with another large bang!

Everything had gone quiet. I couldn’t even hear the wind or rain outside. It was a deathly silence. I lifted my hands up off of my ears. My mouth wide open with shock. I turned towards the clock on my night stand and it was 3am. My hand shaking, I reached over to the glass on the nightstand and drunk the glass of water. I collapsed back onto the bed with a thump, staring up at the ceiling.

The next thing I remember was waking up the next morning, listening to the birds telling the world that they had survived the night. Well, so did I.

Tonight I will have to sleep in that bed, in that room. Will she return?

Batina Darken: The Adventures of a Spooky Girl

Welcome spooky enthusiasts..

My name is Batina Darken, and welcome to my Blog. I am a Creepy Cuter. I love all things, horror, paranormal, Sci-Fi and Gothic. I read tarot, read paranormal romance, LOVE horror movies, adult colouring books, creepy art, Halloween, Knitting and history.

There are plenty of goth blogs out there which are heavily based on the fashion and lifestyle, and I can think of so many… but this isn’t a Goth Blog.. This is a lifestyle blog for Creepy girls.. girls who like horror, but like it to be cute.

Let me explain that a bit further. Take the artwork for this blog. There are cute-looking pastel coloured dolls, yet there is also eyeballs, bats, and mouths sewn with string. Most creepy cute does have a gorier feel to it, like dripping blood, coffins, zombie hands, teeth etc.. so its a less creepy version. I chose this artwork, because of the books, cute bats, and pumpkins.
